Glossary A–ZLetter H
HDR (high dynamic range)
HDR stands for high dynamic range and refers to image and video formats that represent a greater span between the darkest and brightest areas, and more colours, than the conventional SDR format.
Common open formats are HDR10 and HLG. HDR therefore needs greater colour depth, usually 10 bits.
For HDR to be visible, content, player and display must fit together. The display needs enough brightness and contrast, the player must output the format, and the video must be produced in HDR. In screen networks, HDR has so far mainly appeared in high-quality brand presentations, showrooms and large LED walls. Most signage content is created in SDR.
A common problem: an HDR video on a device that does not handle HDR properly looks pale, washed out or too dark. Operators should therefore test the whole chain with a sample video. A display with HDR listed in its data sheet does not guarantee a visible improvement. For text, prices and graphics, HDR offers hardly any benefit.
