Glossary A–ZLetter L

LAN (local area network)

A LAN (local area network) is a local network that connects devices within a building or site, usually over network cables to the Ethernet standard.

In everyday use, LAN often refers to the wired connection as opposed to wireless LAN.

For players, a cable is the most reliable connection: consistent bandwidth, no radio interference and no changed wireless password that locks devices out. With Power over Ethernet, some devices can also be powered over the same cable. In company networks, screens are often given their own separate network segment, such as a virtual LAN (VLAN), kept apart from tills, office and guests.

A copper run to the Ethernet standard is limited to 100 metres per segment. Network sockets should be considered when planning mounting positions, because retrofitting is laborious. Before mounting, it should be checked on site that the socket is live and that the device can reach the management software. A LAN connection does not automatically mean internet access: the firewall and network rules decide where the device may connect.
