Glossary A–ZLetter O
On-premises
On-premises means that an operator runs the management software on its own servers in its own data centre or network, rather than using it as a cloud service.
Installation, operation, updates and backups are then in its own hands.
This option is often chosen by public authorities, hospitals, industrial companies and businesses with strict requirements, or where screens run on a network without internet access. The software is supplied as an installation package or container, and the operator provides server, network, certificates and backups. The data does not leave the operator’s own network as long as no external services are integrated.
More control means more work: someone has to apply security updates for the operating system and the software promptly, check backups and monitor the server. Features that rely on internet services, such as weather, maps or AI, are then missing or need separate approval. There are hybrid forms between pure cloud and on-premises, such as a dedicated installation in a rented data centre. The licensing model and scope of support often differ from the cloud version.
