REST

REST is a widely used architectural style for web interfaces in which programs use ordinary HTTP requests to access resources such as devices, media or appointments, each of which has its own address.

The abbreviation stands for “representational state transfer”.

The type of request determines the action: GET reads, POST creates, PUT or PATCH changes, DELETE removes. Responses usually come as JSON. A management system's REST interface allows, for example, content to be uploaded, playlists to be changed, devices to be queried or reports to be retrieved without using the user interface. This makes connections to merchandise management, calendars or advertising platforms possible.

REST is a style, not a standard; two REST interfaces therefore often behave differently. What matters is good documentation, for example following the OpenAPI Specification. Operators should ensure that access is secured: encrypted connections, separate keys for each connection with limited rights, and the ability to revoke a key. It also matters how long old versions of an interface remain supported.
