City light poster

A city light poster, or CLP, is a portrait poster displayed in a glazed, backlit case.

Typical locations are bus shelters, street furniture, stations and shopping centres. The format corresponds to four sheets of A1 paper, hence the German designation 4/1.

Because it stands at eye level and is lit at night, the CLP is regarded as a medium for pedestrians and close-range viewing. There are also portrait screens in similar cases, often called digital city light posters. They show several creatives in rotation, so that several advertisers share one site. For designers this means that a creative for the digital site needs the same clarity as a poster, only with a shorter display time.

Printed and digital sites are not directly comparable. A poster hangs for the entire booking period, while a creative on a screen shares the time with others. Operators of digital sites should therefore state how long the loop is and how often a creative plays within it. For screens in public spaces, rules on brightness and motion also apply, and these vary by location.
