Mega-Light

A Mega-Light is a large backlit poster in a glazed case, in the 18/1 billboard format.

It usually stands free on a pole or base on busy roads. The lighting keeps it visible after dark.

Many Mega-Lights are built as scrollers that show several posters in turn, so that several advertisers share one site. In use, they are therefore already similar to a digital screen. Screens in the same format now also stand at comparable locations. An example: on an arterial road, an illuminated site alternately shows advertising for a car dealership, a bank and a cinema.

Design for a Mega-Light follows the rules of the large billboard: a big image, few words, legibility from a distance. Anyone moving from the printed to the digital site should check the aspect ratio and clarify which rules on brightness and image changes apply at the location. The term is common in the market but is not used in the same way by all providers; the details in the relevant offer are what count.
