Glossary A–ZLetter F

File size

File size states how much storage a file takes up, measured in bytes and multiples such as kilobytes, megabytes and gigabytes.

For images it depends on resolution, image format and compression; for videos mainly on length and bit rate.

In screen networks, file size is an operational factor: every file has to be transferred to every player and stored there. A video of several gigabytes puts a load on the site's connection and, on a mobile connection, can quickly use up the data allowance. With a hundred screens, every file is distributed a hundred times.

Operators should create content at the screen's resolution and no larger; a 4K video on a Full HD screen costs transfer without looking better. Guidelines for agencies and departments help, such as a maximum size per file. Large files should be loaded overnight or in advance so that they are fully on the device in good time before they are first played.
