Gambling advertising

Gambling advertising is advertising for lotteries, sports betting, amusement arcades, casinos or online gambling, and it is subject to special rules in Germany.

The main basis is the Interstate Treaty on Gambling agreed between the federal states. Only providers holding a licence in Germany may advertise.

For screen networks this means that anyone accepting creatives from a gambling provider should first check that the provider is licensed; the states keep an official list of authorised providers for this purpose. The advertising must not target minors and generally has to state that minors may not take part and that gambling can be addictive. A screen outside a school or in a youth centre is therefore not a suitable place.

The rules differ by type of game, and some types are subject to additional time restrictions in certain media. Operators should treat gambling as a category of its own in their creative review and, if in doubt, ask the provider which mandatory notices apply to the creative. Venue partners often want to exclude such advertising as well.
