Gamification
Gamification is the use of game elements such as points, leaderboards, badges, prize wheels or small challenges in a setting that is not itself a game.
The aim is to increase attention and participation.
On screens, gamification appears, for example, as a quiz at a trade fair stand, a guessing game on a touchscreen in a shop, a competition for the most steps in a company campaign or a progress bar towards a shared fundraising target. Interactive screens and smartphones connected via a QR code are the usual ways of taking part.
Operators should keep the game short and make the link to the actual purpose visible. If there is something to win, the rules for prize draws apply, and the conditions of entry must be clear before taking part. Leaderboards showing employees' names can create pressure to perform and may be subject to co-determination. If scores or contact details are stored, data protection applies.
