Gesture control

Gesture control is operating a screen through hand movements in the air without touching the surface.

A sensor captures the position and movement of the hand. Cameras, depth sensors or radar are used for this.

Gesture control is used where touch is unwanted or impossible: behind a shop window, in areas with strict hygiene requirements or at exhibits that are meant to attract attention. Typical gestures are swiping to browse, pointing to select and holding still briefly to confirm. Some applications also respond to the movement of the whole body.

Many people do not know the gestures and first need them explained on screen; without clear instructions, the function goes unused. People walking past can trigger actions by accident. If recognition works with a camera, data protection questions arise, even if no images are stored. Operators should clarify what data the sensor processes and test the operation on site with people who do not know the system.
