Glossary A–ZLetter G
Grocery retail
Grocery retail covers shops that mainly sell food and everyday goods to consumers.
It includes supermarkets, discounters, hypermarkets and large self-service stores. In German the abbreviation LEH is common in retail and advertising.
For screen networks, grocery retail is an important environment because many people shop regularly and purchase decisions are often made in the store. Screens hang at the entrance, above the fresh food counter, on shelves or in the checkout area. Retailers use them for their own offers and increasingly sell space to manufacturers as retail media. An example: a screen at the chiller cabinet shows a recipe with the matching ingredient next to it.
Many requirements come together in grocery retail: prices must be correct, offers change frequently, and allergens or origin may be mandatory information. Screens compete with posters, displays and announcements for attention; too many messages in a store weaken each one. Operators should clarify who approves content, retailer or manufacturer, and how prices stay current, for example through a link to the merchandise management system.
