HTML5 content

HTML5 content is content built with the web technologies HTML, CSS and JavaScript that runs in a browser environment on the player.

It can include animations, data from interfaces and interactive controls.

HTML5 content is useful for screen networks when a video is not enough: a clock, a weather report, an animated price board or an interactive product finder. The files are usually bundled into a package, for example a ZIP archive or a widget in W3C format, and transferred to the player. There they run locally and only need a connection for fresh data.

Operators should make sure that all fonts, images and code libraries are inside the package and not loaded from the internet during playback; otherwise the content stays blank without a connection. Players differ in the age and performance of their built-in browser, so HTML5 content has to be tested on every device type. Elaborate animations can stutter on weak hardware. HTML5 content should not be confused with a web page that is simply called up by its address.
