Glossary A–ZLetter P
Passenger TV
Passenger TV refers to screens in buses, trams and trains that show news, weather, notices and advertising alongside the next stop.
The screens usually hang from the ceiling or above doors. They entertain and inform during the journey.
A typical screen is split into an area for the line, next stops and connections and an area for the programme. Stop data comes from the vehicle's on-board computer, while the programme is loaded over mobile data or via Wi-Fi when the vehicle is in the depot. Advertising can be tied to the route or the time of day.
Inside a vehicle there are vibrations, temperature changes and a fluctuating on-board voltage. Devices must be suitable for this. Passenger information takes priority and must replace the programme in the event of disruptions. Because content cannot be reloaded all the time, the player must play reliably offline. Sound is usually off, so content must be understandable without it.
