Price checker

A price checker is an in-store device at which customers scan an item’s barcode and see the current price and further details on a screen.

It is connected to the merchandise management or till system. It usually hangs on a pillar or at the end of a shelf.

Customers use it when a price tag is missing or they want to check a promotional price. Modern devices show product images, unit price, variants or matching accessories alongside the price. During idle periods the screen often plays advertising or notices, becoming a small signage screen on the shelf.

Operators should ensure that the price at the checker matches the shelf and the till; towards customers it counts as a price indication. The connection to the price data must therefore be reliable and up to date. Advertising during idle periods must not delay the actual query. A height and font that all customers can use and read, and a scanner that also reads crumpled labels, are important too.
