Glossary A–ZLetter I
Information terminal
An information terminal is a publicly accessible device with a screen, usually a touchscreen, at which visitors look up information themselves.
Typical content includes site maps, directories, product catalogues, timetables or forms. It stands as a totem, hangs on the wall or is built into furniture.
Information terminals are found in shopping centres, town halls, hospitals, hotels and at trade fairs. Unlike a pure display screen, the terminal responds to input. When nobody is using it, it often shows idle content or advertising and invites people to tap it. The software runs in kiosk mode so that nobody can reach the operating system.
Operators should plan the operation for everyone: height, font size, contrast and access for wheelchair users. Accessibility requirements under the German Accessibility Strengthening Act (BFSG) apply to certain self-service terminals; which devices are covered depends on the individual case. A robust surface, cleaning without damage and protection against users opening arbitrary websites also matter.
