Glossary A–ZLetter K

Kiosk mode

In kiosk mode a device locks its settings and other programs so that only the intended content stays reachable.

The device starts directly into this one application and returns to it after a crash or restart.

Kiosk mode protects touch screens in public places where anyone can tap around, such as information terminals, building maps or ordering kiosks. Without it, someone could close the application, open the browser or get into the device settings. Display-only screens benefit too, because they return to the right content by themselves after a fault.

Kiosk mode does not replace password protection of the device settings. Operators should also consider open ports such as USB, where someone could plug in a keyboard, and check whether web content contains links to outside pages. How kiosk mode is set up depends on the player's operating system. Before going live, someone should deliberately try to get out of the application.
