Firmware and update

Firmware is the software built into a device; updates are revisions to firmware and programs.

In digital signage this concerns the screen, the media player and the playback software.

Updates close security gaps, fix bugs and sometimes add new features. In a screen network they are best distributed through the management system rather than device by device. A proven approach is to test an update on one test device or a small group first and only then roll it out to all devices. An update outside operating hours does not disrupt normal use.

Before buying, it should be clear how long the manufacturer supplies updates and how they arrive. A device without security updates remains vulnerable even if it still runs perfectly. Operators should also check whether a failed update returns the device to a working state and whether older players keep working after the management system has been updated.
