Glossary A–ZLetter T
Totem
A totem is a free-standing, upright enclosure with a screen in portrait orientation that needs no wall.
In German it is called a Stele. The base or enclosure often houses the media player, power supply and connections.
Totems stand in entrance areas, foyers, shopping centres, trade fairs, stations and retail spaces. They serve as signposts, information terminals with touchscreens, advertising media or welcome screens. They come single-sided and double-sided, for indoor use and as outdoor totems with air conditioning. Because they stand in the way, they are seen from close by and in passing.
Operators should think about stability and power: a totem must be secured against tipping over, by weight in the base or by bolting to the floor. Cables must not create trip hazards. Content must be designed specifically for portrait orientation; landscape content does not fit. A lockable service access and adequate ventilation of the closed enclosure are also important.
