Portrait and landscape
Landscape is wider than tall, portrait is taller than wide.
A Full HD screen measures 1920 × 1080 pixels in landscape and 1080 × 1920 when rotated by 90 degrees.
Landscape is the usual orientation for screens, for example in waiting areas or above a counter. Portrait is chosen where people walk past or stand in front of the screen, such as on totems, at entrances or in narrow shop windows; it resembles a poster. If a screen is mounted rotated, the player also has to rotate its output, otherwise the content appears on its side.
Content for one orientation cannot simply be rotated or stretched to fit the other. It has to be rebuilt, otherwise a narrow strip remains between black areas or the picture is distorted. Operators with mixed screens should therefore create content for both orientations or use templates that adapt to the format. Before buying, check whether the manufacturer permits portrait operation.
