Glossary A–ZLetter R
Resolution
Resolution states how many pixels make up an image, given as width times height.
Full HD is 1920 × 1080 pixels, 4K (Ultra HD) is 3840 × 2160, which is four times as many. The figure applies to screens as well as to images and videos.
In practice, content should be created at the screen's resolution. A smaller image is upscaled by the player and then looks blurred; a much larger one costs storage and transfer without looking visibly better. On divided screens, what counts is the resolution of the individual zone, not that of the whole device.
More pixels do not automatically mean a more readable picture. Screen size, viewing distance and content matter as well: from several metres away, the difference between Full HD and 4K is often hard to see with large type. Operators should also check whether the media player can actually output the full resolution, as not every player plays 4K video smoothly.
