Glossary A–ZLetter R
Railway station
In a railway station, screens serve mainly passenger information and, separately, advertising to a large and changing audience.
Passenger information includes departure boards, platform displays and disruption notices. Advertising screens hang in halls, entrances and on platforms.
In practice, several systems usually run side by side in a station. Passenger information is controlled by the transport operator and receives its data from operations management. Advertising screens often belong to a media owner who sells them as part of a network. There are also screens belonging to the shops and food outlets in the station.
Stations are noisy, bright, draughty and open around the clock. Screens there need robust housings, protection against damage and often high brightness. For operators: current travel information and safety notices take priority, and advertising must not be mistaken for official information. Ticket machines are subject to their own accessibility requirements. Anyone planning screens in a station agrees locations with the station's owner.
