Shelf-edge display

A shelf-edge display is a narrow, long screen attached to the front edge of a shelf, where it shows prices, product information or advertising.

It is usually a heavily stretched LCD or an LED strip. Several devices side by side form a continuous band along the shelf.

In retail, shelf-edge displays replace printed shelf strips and price labels or add moving content to them. They can highlight offers, show brands along the entire length of a shelf or guide customers to a product with animations. Content and prices arrive over the network, often from central maintenance. Unlike an electronic shelf label, such a display needs power all the time.

The power supply along the shelves has to be planned, as does the mounting, which must not get in the way of goods or customers. Customers usually see the edge from above or below at an angle, so viewing angle and brightness are important. If the display shows prices, the same rules apply as for printed price labels: the price must be correct, clearly assigned and easy to read. Operators should clarify how quickly price changes arrive and what is displayed if a device fails.
