HDMI-CEC
HDMI-CEC is a control function within the HDMI connection that lets connected devices send each other simple commands, such as power on, power off or switch input.
CEC stands for Consumer Electronics Control. It needs no additional cable.
In screen networks, players use HDMI-CEC to switch the display on in the morning and off in the evening according to the operating hours, without anyone needing a remote control. This saves electricity and spares the display. On simple consumer displays, CEC is often the only way to switch them remotely.
CEC is not always reliable. Manufacturers implement the function differently; it is often hidden in the display under its own name and has to be switched on first. Some displays no longer respond in deep standby, others switch to the wrong input after a power cut. Operators should test the interplay of player and display before rollout. Where reliability is essential, RS-232 or control over the network is the more robust choice.
