Glossary A–ZLetter S
Standby mode
In standby mode, a display or player is not fully switched off but waits, with low power consumption, for a signal to switch on.
The picture is dark while parts of the electronics stay active. With networked devices the network connection often remains, so that they can be woken remotely.
In screen networks, displays usually go into standby outside operating hours and are switched back on in the morning by schedule, HDMI-CEC, RS-232 or a network command. This saves electricity and service life without anyone having to be at the device. Many displays have several levels, from quick standby to a deep sleep state with very low consumption.
Operators should check in which level the display still responds to control commands. In the deepest sleep state it is often no longer reachable via the network or CEC and stays dark in the morning. A display in standby is not faulty, but is sometimes shown as such in monitoring. Whether the player also goes into standby or keeps running should be a deliberate decision.
