Glossary A–ZLetter H

House ad

A house ad is advertising that a network operator or venue partner shows for itself on its own screens instead of selling the slot to a third party.

In German it is called Eigenwerbung. It is not invoiced and often fills ad slots that happen to be free.

A shopping centre might use unbooked slots to show its opening hours for a special Sunday trading day, or a sales house might promote bookings on its network. This keeps the loop at its full length, and booked spots continue to run at the agreed frequency. House ads can also be scheduled on purpose, for example for the site's own promotions.

House ads should appear separately from paid bookings in reports so that utilisation and revenue are not distorted. Operators should keep several creatives ready so that the same house ad does not run too often in a row. The rules on image rights, music and advertising law apply to the operator's own creatives just as they do to any other advert.
