LED wall (direct view LED)
An LED wall is a picture area in which every pixel consists of its own small red, green and blue light-emitting diodes that emit light directly.
It is assembled from modules joined into cabinets. Size and shape can therefore be chosen almost freely, without seams between the parts.
LED walls are found on facades, in stadiums, on stages, in foyers, showrooms and in retail as large eye-catchers. They are very bright and therefore readable outdoors, and can be built as strips, columns or curved surfaces. They are driven by their own control electronics, which distribute the player’s signal across the modules.
Operators should choose the pixel pitch to suit the viewing distance. The resolution of an LED wall is its width divided by the pixel pitch: a wall four metres wide with a pitch of 2.5 millimetres has 1600 pixels across, fewer than Full HD. Content must be designed exactly for this resolution. Spare modules from the same production batch also matter, so that colours stay consistent.
