Glossary A–ZLetter V
Video wall
A video wall consists of several screens mounted side by side and one above the other that together form one large picture.
Arrangements such as two by two or three by three devices are common.
A controller splits the image across the individual displays; this can be a separate computer or a function of the screens themselves. Video walls are used where a large area is meant to attract attention, such as lobbies, shop windows, trade fairs or control rooms. Instead of one large picture, the parts can also be played individually or in groups.
For planning, narrow bezels, identical devices and sufficient resolution for the whole area matter. The seams between the screens remain visible, so text should not run across a seam. Brightness and colours of the individual devices have to be matched. Operators should also think about maintenance: one failed device disturbs the whole picture. A video wall should not be confused with a “screen wall” in the management system, meaning an overview of all devices.
