Pixel pitch

Pixel pitch is the distance between the centres of two neighbouring pixels and is given in millimetres.

It is the key figure for LED walls. The smaller the pitch, the more pixels fit on the same area and the closer one can stand.

For LED walls, pixel pitch together with width determines the resolution. A wall in a foyer that people pass closely needs a small pitch; a facade wall seen from the street manages with a larger one. A common rule of thumb sets the minimum viewing distance in metres roughly equal to the pixel pitch in millimetres. It is a rough guide, not a standard.

Operators should choose the pitch according to the actual viewing distance, not the smallest value available. A smaller pitch increases effort and consumption but brings no benefit if nobody comes close. For LCDs the term is mentioned less often; there one speaks of resolution and diagonal. Two walls with the same pixel pitch can differ greatly in brightness and colour accuracy.
