Lift and learn

Lift and learn refers to an in-store presentation in which a screen automatically shows information about a product as soon as a customer takes it from the shelf or from a display base.

Lifting the product is the trigger.

Technically, sensors in the base, weight measurement, light barriers, radio tags or a camera detect which product has been moved. The screen then switches from a general loop to the features, video or price of exactly that item. If customers pick up two products, a comparison can appear. It is used for goods that need explaining, such as electronics, cosmetics, shoes or wine.

Operators should test the technology in everyday use: sensors must cope with staff rearranging stock, restocking and foreign objects. The content should appear before the customer loses interest, that is, almost instantly. The number of lifts can be analysed and shows which products attract interest. If a camera is used, the data protection rules for cameras must be observed.
