Magazine for digital signage and DOOH

MicroLED

MicroLED is a display technology in which each individual pixel consists of microscopically small, self-emitting diodes for red, green and blue.

There is no backlight and there are no liquid crystals. Each pixel is switched on and off directly.

Because the diodes produce their own light, black is truly black and contrast is very high, similar to OLED. Unlike OLED, MicroLED uses inorganic diodes, which reach high brightness levels and are less prone to burn-in. In digital signage, MicroLED mainly appears as a further development of the LED wall with a very fine pixel pitch, which can be assembled from modules into large, seamless surfaces.

Manufacturing is complex, because millions of tiny diodes have to be placed without defects. The term is not used consistently in the market; some suppliers already apply it to fine-pitch LED walls. Operators should therefore not go by the name but by pixel pitch, construction, brightness, uniformity and service concept, and judge the picture from the planned viewing distance.
