NFC (near-field communication)
NFC (near-field communication) is a radio technology for exchanging data over a few centimetres, for example between a smartphone and a small chip or reader.
The connection is made when the phone is held close to the spot. NFC is known from contactless payment.
At screens, an NFC chip next to the display can hand over a link, for example to an offer, a menu or a form. Conversely, a reader on the display can trigger content when someone holds a card or phone in front of it, for example at an information terminal or a room sign. NFC also works without a camera and without scanning a code.
Operators should bear in mind that not everyone knows they can hold their phone to a spot; a clear notice is needed. A QR code is often more familiar and easier to understand. The short range is intentional and protects against unwanted reading. An NFC chip in a public place can be covered or swapped, so it should be fitted where it is protected.
