RoHS

RoHS is an EU directive that restricts the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment.

The abbreviation stands for “Restriction of Hazardous Substances”. The relevant act is Directive 2011/65/EU with its later amendments.

The restricted substances include lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, certain flame retardants and several plasticisers. The substances must not exceed defined maximum levels in the components; temporary exemptions exist for individual applications. In Germany, the directive is implemented through the Electrical and Electronic Equipment Substances Ordinance. Compliance is part of the CE marking that a manufacturer affixes.

For operators of screen networks, RoHS matters mainly when purchasing: screens, players, power supplies and accessories must meet the requirements when they are placed on the EU market. Anyone who imports devices themselves from outside the EU or sells them under their own name takes on obligations for compliance. RoHS governs the substances in the device, not take-back and disposal; those are covered by the German Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act.
