German Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act (ElektroG)

The ElektroG, Germany's Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act, governs the placing on the market, take-back and disposal of electrical and electronic equipment.

It transposes the European WEEE Directive on waste electrical and electronic equipment. Screens, players and accessories fall within its scope.

For screen networks it affects two sides. Anyone who manufactures or imports equipment, or sells it under their own name, must register before selling and arrange for take-back. Anyone who operates equipment must not put old devices in general waste but must dispose of them separately through permitted channels. Screens form a category of their own under the Act.

For equipment used commercially, take-back is often governed by arrangements with the dealer or manufacturer; operators should clarify this at the time of purchase. Stored personal data must be deleted before handing devices over, and the owner is responsible for this. For players this includes access credentials for the Wi-Fi and for the management software. Anyone who imports devices themselves or offers them under their own brand can thereby become a producer within the meaning of the Act.
