Glossary A–ZLetter E

Energy efficiency class

The energy efficiency class places an electronic display on the EU energy label in a grade from A to G, depending on how much electricity it uses relative to its picture area.

Since 1 March 2021 this scale has also applied to digital signage displays. The label also states consumption and links via a QR code to an EU product database.

When buying, the class offers a quick comparison between devices of the same size. For screens that run many hours a day, consumption is an ongoing cost. The class helps to estimate it in advance, but does not replace one’s own calculation using the real operating hours and the brightness setting.

Many signage displays carry no label because the regulation exempts certain devices, including those for permanent outdoor use, very bright devices, very small or very large picture areas and modules for larger walls. So the class is often missing on precisely the devices that use the most power. In those cases only the consumption figures in the data sheet help.
