Device inventory
A device inventory is a maintained list of all devices in a screen network with their key details, such as location, model, serial number, software version and who is responsible.
It can be kept in the management software, in a separate inventory system or in a spreadsheet.
The inventory answers questions that come up all the time: which players are still running old firmware? For which displays is the warranty about to expire? Which devices no longer receive security updates? Where is the device called “Player 7” mounted? Useful additional columns are purchase date, end of warranty, the manufacturer’s end of support, network segment, licence and whether the default password has been changed.
An inventory is only as good as its upkeep. Anything the management software reports automatically, such as software version and last contact, should not be typed in by hand. Spare devices in storage and retired devices belong in it as well, so that nothing disappears unnoticed and old devices are disposed of properly. For planning replacements, the end of support for each device is the most important column.
