Device ID (UUID)

A device ID is a unique identifier by which management software recognises a specific device, regardless of its name or network address.

A UUID (universally unique identifier) is often used for this: a 128-bit number usually written as 36 characters in five groups.

A player sends its device ID with every request. A screen therefore remains the same entry even if it is renamed, gets a new IP address or moves to a different site. Licences, proof-of-play records and logs are tied to this identifier. A UUID looks something like this: 123e4567-e89b-12d3-a456-426614174000.

If the ID changes, for example after a factory reset, a reinstallation or a storage replacement, the device appears as a new player, while its history and licence stay with the old entry. Operators should know how the ID is generated on their devices and when it changes. The display name is for people, the ID for the system; both belong in the device inventory.
