Initial setup (provisioning)

Initial setup, also called provisioning, is the process by which a new device receives its basic settings and is connected to the management software, up to the point where it shows its first content.

This includes network, time, orientation and assignment to an entry in the management software.

Three approaches are common. With a pairing code, the player shows a short code after starting, which is entered in the management software. With pre-configured devices, the address and settings are already on the device, for example from a file or a USB stick. With automatic provisioning (zero-touch), the device registers itself using its identifier and receives a prepared profile. Name, location, group, licence and playlist follow.

Many faults in the first weeks originate here: a network that is only checked on site, a wrong time zone, a display power-saving mode or an unchanged default login. Operators should run a short test at the installation site before mounting and agree a naming scheme that includes the location. With many devices, a prepared list of location, name and group pays off.
