Smart Display Module (SDM)
A Smart Display Module is a standardised, compact computing module that is inserted into a matching slot in the screen and turns it into a complete player.
The abbreviation is SDM. The standard is newer, and the module smaller, than with the well-known OPS slot.
As with the OPS module, the computing module receives power and its video connection directly from the screen; external cables and a separate player are no longer needed. Because the module is small, it can also be built into flat screens and tight housings. If the computing power is no longer sufficient or the module fails, only the module is replaced and the screen stays on the wall.
An SDM slot does not accept OPS modules and vice versa; the two standards are not interchangeable. The range of screens and modules is smaller than for OPS. Before buying, operators should check which modules are available and approved for the chosen screen, which operating system they run and how long they will receive updates.
