Glossary A–ZLetter S
Stadium and arena
In stadiums and arenas, screens are part of the event: large video walls, LED perimeter boards, screens in concourses, at kiosks and in boxes show the action, information and advertising.
Hundreds of screens are often connected to one network.
The video wall shows replays, the score and opening shows, while LED perimeter boards show sponsors in view of the TV cameras. Concourses show live images, directions, menus and notes on exits. Many screens are switched at the same time for particular moments, such as a goal or half-time.
With large crowds, safety comes first. All screens must be able to show instructions immediately in the event of an evacuation or incident. Schedules are tight and often depend on a control room that intervenes live. Rights to match footage and music must be clarified separately. Network and power supply need reserves, as a failure is noticed in front of a full house. Outside events, the screens should be switched off deliberately.
