Uniformity

Uniformity describes how evenly brightness and colour are distributed across the entire picture area of a display or video wall.

Ideally, a single-coloured area would look equally bright and equally tinted everywhere. In practice there are always small deviations.

Deviations become visible mainly in large single-coloured areas, such as a light grey or white background. Typical signs are brighter corners, cloudy patches on dark areas or a slight colour cast on one side. In video walls, differences between the individual displays stand out; in LED walls, differences between modules from different production batches.

For video walls, operators should order displays from the same product line and, where possible, the same batch, and order spares at the same time. Many professional displays have a compensation function that smooths differences at the factory, often at the expense of peak brightness. Calibration helps to match the devices to each other. Content with gradients, images and movement hides small differences better than flat areas.
