Mandatory workplace notices

The duty to post workplace notices requires employers in Germany to make certain laws and information accessible to their staff.

Depending on the business, these include the Working Hours Act, the Maternity Protection Act, the Youth Employment Protection Act or the General Equal Treatment Act. These texts used to hang on the noticeboard; today many of the duties can also be met digitally, provided all staff have unrestricted access.

Screens in break rooms or at the entrance to a production hall are therefore an obvious place. In practice this works best as a notice that shows the way to the text, such as a pointer to the intranet or to a terminal where the full wording can be read. An information kiosk with a search function serves the purpose better than a slide in a running loop.

A text that appears for only a few seconds in a loop cannot be read permanently and in full. Operators should therefore clarify where the complete wording can be accessed at any time and whether staff without their own computer have access too. Which notices a particular business needs depends on its size, sector and workforce and has to be checked case by case.
