Glossary A–ZLetter P

Pharmacy sales area

The pharmacy sales area is the room in a pharmacy where medicines are handed to customers and advice is given.

In German, it is called the “Offizin”, a term from pharmacy law. It includes the counter, the behind-the-counter display and the self-selection area.

Screens in the sales area hang behind or above the counter, on shelves and in the shop window. They show seasonal health topics, services such as vaccinations or blood pressure checks, offers from the range and the out-of-hours rota. Because customers wait at the counter, content has a little time here.

Strict advertising law applies in a pharmacy. Prescription-only medicines may not be advertised to the public, and medicinal products advertising law prohibits further forms of advertising outside professional circles. Advertising for medicines requires mandatory information, which must also be legible on screen. Health information should remain factual and not stir up fear. The out-of-hours rota must be current and should come automatically from a reliable source.
