Glossary A–ZLetter P
Playlist
A playlist is the list of content a screen shows one after another, with the duration of each item.
A playlist can be assigned to several devices, so a change in one place takes effect everywhere. A retail chain can maintain one shared playlist for all branches and allow individual items only at certain locations. Items can have time windows and are then played only at certain times. Images are given a fixed display time, while videos usually run for their own length.
A playlist should not get too long: people who only pass a screen briefly will otherwise only ever see a small part of it. Content with an expiry date prevents past promotions from continuing to run. Operators should also decide what appears when all items are currently outside their time windows. With advertising, the total length of the playlist determines how often a spot plays per hour.
