Glossary A–ZLetter Q

Quick-service restaurant (QSR)

A quick-service restaurant is a fast-food restaurant with quick service, a fixed menu and ordering at the till, a kiosk or a drive-through.

Screens are part of the process there: menu boards, self-order kiosks, collection displays and drive-through displays.

The menu boards above the counter change the offer by time of day, for example breakfast in the morning, and show promotions. Self-order kiosks take orders, and a collection display shows which order numbers are ready. In the kitchen, screens show incoming orders. Many chains control content centrally for all branches, with regional prices.

In a quick-service restaurant, prices on all screens must match the till, and sold-out items should disappear. The rules on price indication and allergen information also apply to digital menus. If a menu board fails, the offer is missing, so fallback content and a fast fault alert are needed. Central control saves work but needs clear rules on what branches may change themselves.
