Self-order kiosk

A self-order kiosk is a touchscreen device at which guests order, and usually also pay, by themselves without queuing at a till.

It is found mainly in quick-service restaurants, canteens and cinemas. The order goes straight to the kitchen or collection point.

The guest picks dishes from an illustrated menu, customises them, for example without onions, and pays at the built-in card terminal. They receive a number and follow on a collection display when their food is ready. The kiosk is connected to the till system so that prices, availability and accounting are correct.

A self-order kiosk is more a till than an advertising screen. Failures cost sales, so stability, maintenance and a route to the till when the device is down all matter. Since June 2025, Germany's Accessibility Strengthening Act (BFSG) has applied to certain self-service and payment terminals; whether a device is covered depends on its equipment and purpose. Allergens and prices must be shown correctly here too.
