Glossary A–ZLetter W

Windows player

A Windows player is a computer with the Windows operating system on which player software plays content for a display.

It is usually a mini PC, sometimes a module that slots into the display. It offers plenty of processing power and can also run programs that exist only for Windows.

In screen networks, a Windows player is used where specialist applications, Office files, complex web content, multiple outputs or connected devices such as scanners and card readers are needed. It can be integrated into an existing IT environment and managed with its tools. It is also often used for video walls with several outputs.

Operators should bear in mind that Windows is built for a workstation, not for a display. Automatic updates, restarts, pop-up notices and power-saving functions can interrupt playback and must be configured deliberately. A kiosk mode stops users from reaching the system. Updates, virus protection and licences require ongoing care. After a power cut, the device must restart on its own.
