Glossary A–ZLetter A

Android player

An Android player is a media player that runs the Android operating system and uses a player app to show content.

It is usually a small box connected to the display via HDMI. Android is common on many low-cost devices and plays video efficiently.

In screen networks, Android players sit behind menu boards, in waiting rooms and in branches. The app starts on its own after power-on, fetches its schedule from the CMS and shows it. Many devices can be restarted and updated remotely. For images, video and simple web content the performance is usually sufficient.

Before buying, operators should check which Android version the device runs and for how long the manufacturer will still supply security updates. An old version can mean that newer apps no longer run. Consumer devices are often not built for continuous operation, autostart and remote maintenance. It also matters whether the app comes back up without manual intervention after a power cut.
