Digital signage

Digital signage is the technical umbrella term for screens that are supplied with content remotely and address several viewers.

Digital signage is found in retail, medical practices and public offices, in lobbies, staff restaurants, factory halls and stations. The screens show offers, waiting numbers, menus, room bookings or performance figures. Besides the screen, the system includes a media player that plays the content and a management system in which content is maintained and assigned to devices.

In its energy labelling regulation for electronic displays, the EU lists features of digital signage displays such as a unique identifier, access protection, a network connection and fixed mounting. The term describes the device and its operation, not a business model: whether third-party advertising runs on the screen is a separate question. A screen can therefore be digital signage, DOOH and retail media at the same time.
