St Martin's Day: the lantern parade on the community screen

Meeting point, time, route, rain cancellation: what a screen in the town hall, parish hall or club house should show before 11 November.

On Wednesday 11 November 2026 it is St Martin's Day, and in many communities children walk through the village with lanterns. A screen in the town hall, parish hall or club house is a good place to announce the parade.

Four details every announcement needs

  1. Meeting point and time, large and first.
  2. Route: a simple sketch or three street names.
  3. Weather: who decides if it rains, and where is the result posted?
  4. Contact person with a number.

A good image has one main message: "Lantern parade, Wednesday, 11 Nov, 5 p.m., meeting point church square".

A note on the road

If the parade goes along public roads, it may be an event for which roads are used beyond normal traffic. Under section 29(2) of the German Road Traffic Regulations such events need a permit. Who issues it is not stated in the section; ask your municipality early. The screen announces only what is approved. This article is not legal advice.

What does not belong on the screen

  • Photos of children without consent. Images may be publicly displayed only with the consent of the person pictured (section 22 of the German Art Copyright Act).
  • Names of children, not even in participant lists.

Timing

The announcement works if it appears a week beforehand. On the day itself a note on the weather is added. After that it must vanish; anyone who sets up the slide with a start and end date saves the clean-up.
